The term "Superfood" has been a label commonly used in the food industry to describe a food with many health benefits and it is recommended to incorporate a variety of these foods into your diet on a daily basis.
Here at Assuaged, we decided to do more research on which superfoods are not only vegan, but also a great way to start your day off strong with clean fuel for energizing the body. As they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day after all!
1. Acai Berries
Containing nearly 20 amino acids and many antioxidants, Acai Berries are the perfect addition to any breakfast. The very trending fruit, many people blend these berries together and add yummy toppings, such as nuts and other fruit. To be inspired for your own bowl, I strongly encourage you to browse sites like Instagram and Pinterest for mouth-watering, colorful pictures.
2. Goji Berries
These berries are high in vitamin E & C. There have been studies to show how they can help prevent and treat illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. I encourage you to add these to your morning oatmeal or cereal for that extra tangy taste.
3. Blueberries
The more common berry, blueberries, are high in fiber and manganese, as well as vitamin K. It has also been found to reduce Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). This would be a great addition to breakfast foods such as oatmeal, pancakes, waffles or cereal.
4. Green Tea
Instead of your typical morning coffee along with your breakfast, why don't you swap it out for a green tea? While caffeine may heighten anxiety, green tea has been proven to lower stress levels. The tea contains anti-inflammatory properties that patients with arthritis use to reduce symptoms.
5. Soybeans
This superfood is typically associated with people with allergies to dairy, however, we all could benefit from this food. The bean is used to produce soy milk, soy nuts, as well as my favorite, Edamame. Soy beans are harvested prematurely, when they are still green in color, to make the Edamame bean.
6. Grapefruit
This citrus fruit is high in fiber, potassium and folate. Though bitter alone, mixed with sweeter fruits, grapefruit can be enjoyable. The provide powerful health benefits, including weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease.
7. Walnuts
This superfood is found to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabeties and inflammation. It is a source of Omega-3 fatty acids found to help treat mental illness such as depression and anxiety.
8. Oats
As mentioned earlier as a superfood's perfect pair, oats are the best breakfood in oatmeal. For the healthiest option, use Oat Groats-- the least processed version of the whole oat. For the tastiest results, top your oatmeal with the various superfood fruits listed earlier!
9. Lemon & Limes
Not only high in vitamin C, these two combined can help your digestive system in aiding the enzymes take action. They can help control your cravings throughout the day, helping control weight. Too tart on their own, squeeze the fresh juice into water every morning. This also helps to maintain the pH balance of the body.
10. Almonds
Almonds are known to be the nut with the highest amount of calcium. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, and provide healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium and vitamin E. They can help to lower blood sugar levels, reduced blood pressure, and lower cholesterol levels.
