Social Pressures and Health Decisions

CONTRIBUTORS

Every day, people make a variety of health-related decisions. These decisions can be as simple as selecting food and beverages, and they are frequently influenced by social factors.

This blog explores this subject in order to better understand how certain social factors influence health decisions.

Health Decisions

Health decisions are decisions made to preserve, improve, or manage one's health. These decisions can range from the basic, such as eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly, to the more complex ones, such as seeking medical treatment or undergoing a surgical operation.

Preventive treatment, lifestyle changes, pharmaceutical use, and emotional well-being can all constitute in health decisions. In both preventative and curative care, our health decisions are critical.

There is a common misconception that healthcare providers' decisions alone influence our health. Often, people do not recognize or realize the degree to which their decisions contribute to their well-being until it is too late.

Social Pressures

Social pressures are the various ways individuals are influenced by social factors and people in their surroundings. These influences can be beneficial or harmful, and they can come through direct or indirect relationships with loved ones, peers, and larger social groupings like communities or society in general.

Social pressures can alter people's views, attitudes, behaviors, and decisions, and they do so frequently through processes like social comparison, conformity, obedience, and peer pressure. Social pressures have an impact on many aspects of life, including health.

Factors Influencing the Relationship between Social Pressure and Health Decisions

Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between health decisions and social influences such as media, family, and peer influence, as well as their impact on patient health decisions.

Many studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic status and health decisions; however, in most of the research, the decisions in question are those of providers rather than patients.[2]

1. Peer Influences

Peer pressure can influence an individual's health decision. If an individual's friends exhibit unhealthy behaviors on a regular basis, they are likely to feel pressured to do the same.

This pressure can come from the friends directly pressuring one to do the same, or it can come from the individual simply feeling compelled to make the same decisions as their peers.

Research shows that the way people in our social networks act can influence how our brains perceive health messages.[1] Essentially, if we have peers who avoid physical activity, we may not respond to information about being active and healthy.

2. Socioeconomic Status

Socioeconomic status can have an impact on health decisions in a variety of ways, including lifestyle choices.

Individuals with a better socioeconomic background frequently have greater resources to acquire healthier eating choices and physical activity. Individuals with lower socioeconomic status, on the other hand, may experience financial restraints, restricted dietary options, and unpleasant living conditions, all of which may lead to unhealthy behaviors.

People with lower socioeconomic backgroundsare more inclined to engage in unhealthy habits than people with greater socioeconomic status.[2]

3. Family Influence

As long as there is no abuse or neglect, research demonstrates that family involvement and consideration of family interests can actually increase patients' overall competence.[3]

Individual health decisions can be influenced by family in a variety of ways, including direct involvement of family members in decision-making or the influence of family values and traditions in those decisions.

4. Media

Patient behavior and health decisions are greatly influenced by internet health information.[4] A patient's consumption or usage of media can either positively or negatively influence their health decisions.

On the positive side, research indicates that the usage of social media has resulted in more equal interactions between the patient and the medical provider.

On the negative side, social media may convey misinformation and put pressure on patients to live up to the seemingly flawless life presented on the internet, prompting patients to make unhealthy choices.

The Importance of Individual Values

It is critical to recognize and analyze the various values that we have as individuals and how they influence our behavior and health decisions.

Understanding this relationship and employing mindful practices can help us make better health decisions.

Favour Edehomon

Hello! My name is Favour Edehomon, I am a Sophomore Biopsychology student at Oglethorpe University. I live in Norcross with my family, but we are originally from Nigeria. After my undergraduate, i plan on getting a master's in psychology and then a PhD in Health Psychology. While this is my current goal, I am still very open to exploring and learning. I love going out with my family and friends, doodling, and doing makeup. A fun fact about me is that I have never sprained or broken any part of my body. As a child I really enjoyed reading, I have grown out of it in recent years, but I hope that's something I pick up again. I do a lot of volunteering sometimes; I volunteer at Zoo Atlanta during special events and with health educator groups like Diabetes You Can Win. I am also a Full-time Dialysis Technician; I am a Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) and a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT).
