Welcome to the third Mercury retrograde of 2022. Starting Friday, September 9, the planet of mischief and mayhem backpedals into lovely Libra until the 22nd, and then, until October 2nd, he’ll be in health-conscious Virgo.
Every retrograde brings challenges with technical glitches, misplaced items, and irksome delays. Revisit, rework, revise, repair—any word that starts with “re” is a good reminder of what to focus on when Mercury is moonwalking through the sky.
Each period also has a special focus depending upon which signs Mercury moves through. This retro, the focus is on relationships, organization, health, and self-care.
In Libra, Mercury’s backward motion encourages you to give yourself a break. Relax. Rejuvenate. Refresh. If you’ve let your self-care routine slip, now is the perfect time to recreate the habit of a daily ritual that helps your mind, body, and spirit.
Move your body. You don’t have to hit it hard at the gym. Weather permitting, take a walk. Take a few minutes each hour to stretch your body. Practice deep breathing exercises.
Calm your mind. Get lost in a good book. Sample a sleep or relaxation app. Take a break from your phone, the TV, and social media. Chances are your world will not end if you step out of it for a few hours.
Libra is also the sign of relationships of all kinds—love, marriage, business, friends—so take a look at what you may need to work on in any of these areas. Don’t be surprised if you hear from an ex or a long-lost friend. Mercury is notorious for bringing back people we thought we’d never see again. If you want to renew an old relationship, this is a perfect time 1 to reach out.
On the 23rd, Mercury backs into Virgo, the sign of health, service to others, and your day job. Beware of glitches at work and don’t forget to back up your files and keep up with your to-do list. Pay attention to your health during this period.
Get organized. Start tackling an overstuffed closet, the kitchen junk drawer, or those piles of papers and old magazines that may be lying around gathering dust. Just don’t try to do everything at once. Schedule a few minutes a day or a couple hours a week to focus on one area. Mercury can get us all hot and motivated to tackle anything, and then help us lose our momentum just as fast as it appeared. Slow but steady gets these jobs done. Remember you’re laying groundwork for a good habit, so don’t expect to have every mess shoveled out in a couple of weeks.
Get a checkup. Schedule an overdue checkup. Make sure to write down any questions you have for your health care professional because retro Mercury makes us more forgetful. If something’s been nagging you for a while, it could worsen during this retrograde, so don’t put off getting any health issues checked.
Virgo is also the sign of your day job, so if you’re not happy where you are, now is a good time to start looking. Don’t make a sudden move (unless it’s absolutely necessary, and then double-check money, benefits, and job responsibilities first). Do start searching for something better.
As always, be patient with the inevitable headaches that will happen. When Mercury slows down, he encourages us (sometimes forces us) to slow down too. And remember, for the next three+ weeks, the focus is on you!
