The Health Benefits of Sea Moss

CONTRIBUTORS

Sea moss, a member of the red seaweed family, is a nutritional powerhouse. It is high in calcium, iodine, potassium, and protein, along with several vitamins. Its possible health benefits include being anti-inflammatory, managing blood sugar, improving gastrointestinal, heart, and thyroid health, increasing iodine levels, and managing weight. However, it's important to note that there is currently little scientific evidence to back up these health claims. Most of the research that is available at this time has been conducted on cells or animals or within test tubes. The forms it comes in include dried, gel, powder, or raw.

What Minerals Are In Sea Moss?

The main minerals found in sea moss are calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, sulfur, and zinc. It is also high in vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K.

What Does Sea Moss Do For The Body?

Sea moss can help to improve gastrointestinal health by being a good source of fiber and prebiotics. The source of fiber is also beneficial for keeping a feeling of satiety around longer, reducing the number of cravings, and allowing blood sugar levels to be better maintained with a slower digestion process. It is also high in omega-3, a type of fatty acid that can help to lower the chances of developing cardiovascular disease. The omega-3 in sea moss is different from that in fish, as it is in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which the body can convert into the more potent forms of omega-3 found in fish. The phytochemicals present in sea moss can boost the immune system. Thyroid health can be improved with sea moss’s sources of iodine and tyrosine. Sea moss also contains significant amounts of iron, which can enhance energy levels. Lastly, sea moss has high antioxidant levels and is considered to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can potentially improve conditions like acne, arthritis, heart disease, or psoriasis.

What Happens If You Take Sea Moss Every Day?

Utilizing sea moss as a daily health supplement can have both positive and negative effects. As discussed previously, consuming sea moss can improve gut, heart, and thyroid health and boost the immune system. These benefits are significant and can provide reassurance about the potential of sea moss. However, it's important to be aware of possible side effects, such as allergic reactions, diarrhea, an enlarged thyroid gland, an increase in heavy metal levels within the body, nausea, and vomiting.

How Long Does It Take For Sea Moss To Start Working?

Sea moss, a versatile natural supplement, can bring about beneficial impacts in a variety of areas. Depending on the purpose, these impacts can be experienced anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after its introduction to an individual’s lifestyle. If the sea moss is being taken for improvements in digestion or energy, benefits are likely to be seen about a week after the first dose. For noticeable weight loss, sea moss is expected to take longer, probably months, before the effects are seen.

How Can I Tell If The Sea Moss Is Working?

The most empowering and reliable way to determine the effectiveness of sea moss is to be aware of any improvements you notice within your body. Are you feeling better? Do you notice an increase in your energy levels? Has your skin health improved? Are your gastrointestinal symptoms less pronounced? These are all personal indicators that sea moss may be working for you. Look for signs such as reduced bloating, more regular bowel movements, decreased fatigue, radiant skin, and improved joint flexibility.

Do Doctors Recommend Sea Moss?

Often, doctors have seen benefits with taking sea moss. Still, they only recommend it in moderation, so discuss with your healthcare practitioner the potential of supplementing sea moss before starting a new regimen. While sea moss contains excellent amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, it can also include hazardous amounts of heavy metals or iodine. This is why moderation is essential. While iodine is helpful for improving or sustaining thyroid health, it can be dangerous to one’s health in too high of amounts. Also, depending on where the sea moss is sourced from, it can be relatively high in heavy metals like aluminum, cadmium, lead, or mercury. It is also essential for individuals prescribed blood thinners to discuss with a healthcare practitioner before starting sea moss as it is a rich source of vitamin K, which can impact the medication’s effectiveness.

Who Should Not Take Sea Moss?

Individuals who are at higher risk of adverse effects from supplementing sea moss include women who are breastfeeding or pregnant, those with poor thyroid health, those with a shellfish allergy, individuals who have been prescribed a blood thinning medication, individuals who have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, and those who frequently experience high blood pressure. Consuming high levels of iodine, which is possible when taking sea moss, can be hazardous for the mother and fetus. High amounts of iodine can also cause thyroid health to decline. Since sea moss is harvested from sources similar to shellfish, those with a shellfish allergy can have an allergic reaction to sea moss. Sea moss can also have a blood-thinning effect, so for those who are already on a blood-thinning medication, this can potentially be dangerous. Sea moss can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms for those who have a sensitive stomach due to inflammatory bowel disease, and it can also lead to adverse side effects for those who experience high blood pressure.
